Extant excerpts from the Mingxiang ji mention dates as late as 485. The Xi guanshiyin yingyan ji 繫觀世音應驗記 completed in 501 mentions Wang Yan 王琰, the author of the Mingxiang ji, and his work. Campany concurs with Antonello Palumbo’s suggestion that the text might have been composed around 490, because the famous debate on the immortality of the soul that took place in 489 might have motivated Wang Yan to compile this work.
