Satō Tatsugen argues that the Sanlun xuanyi 三論玄義 T1852 was conceived when Jizang was at the Huiri Terrace 慧日道場 in Yangzhou, but the text was completed in 602 CE [Satō does not give exact information about the years when Jizang stayed at the Huiri Terrace. However, he mentions that Jizang was greeted by King Yang Guang 晉王廣 there in 開皇十一·十二年頃, i.e., in about 591-592, and he moved to Chang’an 長安 in 開皇十八·十九年頃, i.e., 598-599; pp. 160-161). –LX]. Satō's reasons for this claim are as follows. (1) A record at the beginning of T1852 reads: “Written by Monk Jizang of the Huiri Terrace at imperial behest” 慧日道場沙門吉藏奉命撰, which clearly shows that Jizang wrote this text while at the Huiri Terrace. (2) In the preface of the Shi'ermen lun shu 十二門論疏 T1825, Jizang claimed: "In the past, I already wrote a text about the three śāstras" 餘昔已著三論文玄正言. However, (3) in the Sanlun xuanyi jianyouji 三論玄義檢幽集 T2300, we read: 奉命撰者,或本云,大隋仁壽二年四月奉令撰 (T2300 (LXX) 381c): "fengmingzhuan 奉命撰 (viz. an addition from the editor: in T1852) means that some text says that it was written under at imperial behest under the Sui Dynasty, in the second year of Renshou (i.e., AD 602), and this indicates that T1852 was finalized in 602. (4) T1852 deals with the three major Mādhyamaka śāstras, and Jizang has further laid out his mature thought on typical topics in this area. It is plausible to assume that this work records Jizang’s mature thought at the end of his life. (5) Some explanations or arguments in T1852 can be discovered in the Dasheng xuanlun 大乘玄論 T1853 (e.g., Erzhi yi 二智義) and the Zhongguan lun shu 中觀論疏 T1824 (e.g., Erdi yi 二諦義), which easily leads to the conclusion that T1852 is later than T1853 and T1824. In summary, Satō proposes that Jizang started conceiving of T1852 when he was in Yangzhou, but the text was only completed when he polished the text in his old age, in 602.
