The "Preface to the Sūtra on the Thirty-Seven Categories" is traditionally dated to 396 CE, but Zacchetti describes his discovery in the text of an apparent citation from the Dīrghāgama translated in 413, which would make that date impossible. He suggests on this basis that the preface may be in part or whole a forgery. The same verse also appears in T161, which is listed among Dao'an's anonymous scriptures, and Zacchetti discusses the possibility that Tanwulan could have got it from there; however, he follows Zürcher in noting that the portion of T161 containing this verse only appears at the end of the text, and is missing in some editions, and is therefore a likely spurious later addition.

A series of verses at the end of T161 appear are not found in SYM; T161 (III) 387b27-388a12 w. n. 55. Zacchetti follows Zürcher in regarding these verses as most likely a spurious later addition to the text.
