The Saihō shinan shō 西方指南抄 T2674 is an anonymous compilation of works attributed to the Japanese Pure Land patriarch Hōnen 法然. A manuscript of this work written by the Jōdo Shinshū patriarch Shinran 親鸞 is extant (National Treasure of Japan no. 176 https://kunishitei.bunka.go.jp/heritage/detail/201/695). The Taishō Tripiṭaka does not provide any attribution, nor does the Jōdoshū daijiten 浄土宗大辞典 (https://jodoshuzensho.jp/daijiten/index.php/%E8%A5%BF%E6%96%B9%E6%8C%87%E5%8D%97%E6%8A%84 ). Akibo reports that there exists scholarly debate over the the attribution of T2674. One theory holds that the collection was actually compiled by Shinran (represented by Asano Kyōshin 浅野教信, Yoshiyama Shōkai 霊山勝海, 1932–2020, and Kakehashi Jitsuen 梯實圓, 1927–2014). Another theory holds that the collection was compiled before Shinran, and merely transcribed by him (represented by Akamatsu Toshihide 赤松俊秀, 1907–1979, Hiramatsu Reizō 平松令三, 1919–2013, and Nakano Masaaki 中野正明). The debate remains unresolved. Abiko himself favours the ‘Shinran transcription’ theory. He argues: 1. The transcription theory is incompatible with the view that the abridgement of Go-seppō no koto 御説法事 was also achieved by Shinran. 2. If the abridgement of Go-seppō no koto is attributed to Shinran, then the compilation theory should be accepted. 3. Considering the format T2674, there is sufficient evidence for the transcription theory, and we should hesitate to conclude that the abridgement of Go-seppō no Koto was achieved by Shinran.
