The Saihō shinan shō 西方指南抄 T2674 is an anonymous compilation of works attributed to the Japanese Pure Land patriarch Hōnen 法然. A manuscript of this work written by the Jōdo Shinshū patriarch Shinran 親鸞 is extant (National Treasure of Japan no. 176 https://kunishitei.bunka.go.jp/heritage/detail/201/695). The Taishō Tripiṭaka does not provide any attribution, nor does the Jōdoshū daijiten 浄土宗大辞典 (https://jodoshuzensho.jp/daijiten/index.php/%E8%A5%BF%E6%96%B9%E6%8C%87%E5%8D%97%E6%8A%84 ). Yamada reports on several different theories about the compilation process and ascription of T2674. Asano supports the theory that the text was compiled by Shinran, arguing that T2674 was originally conceived as three volumes, but that Shinran later divided each volume into a main 本 volume and a secondary 末 volume. Nakano supports the theory that the text was merely transcribed by Shinran, but not actually compiled by him, arguing that the original text was originally in six volumes; Nakano and speculates on the circumstances at the time of transcription by closely examining the colophon, red ink and cover, internal title 内題, and end title 尾題 of each volume.
