The preface itself states it was authored by Sengrui (弘始元年八月十二日僧叡造首), and Felbur holds that this note seems not to have been added later, even as he acknowledges that the note is anomalous. Maming pusa zhuan 馬鳴菩薩傳

Felbur reports that Ochiai Torinoshi has argued that Sengrui may be the author of the biography of Aśvaghoṣa discovered in 1991 among the Nanatsudera 七寺 manuscripts. Citing Ochiai Toshinori 落合俊典, "Sōei to Memyō bosatsu den 僧叡と馬鳴菩薩伝," IBK 44, no. 2 (1996): 68-73.

Claiming Er Qin lu 二秦錄 as his source, Daoxuan dates the Siyi jing to the 1st day of the 10th month of the 4th year of Hongshi (=Nov 10, 402 CE). This information is then repeated in DZKZM and KYL.
