Two commentaries on the Lotus Sūtra are ascribed to Zhiyi: Fahua xianyi 法華經玄義 (妙法蓮華經玄義) T1716, and the Fahua wenju 法華文句 (妙法蓮華經文句) T1718. Kanno states that neither of these works is in fact by Zhiyi. They are, rather, Guanding's 灌頂 (561–632) edited notes based on lectures given by Zhiyi on the text.

In Ch. 3, Hirai treats the Fahua jing xuanyi 法華經玄義 T1716 (妙法蓮華經玄義). According to later Tiantai tradition, T1716 represents either a record of notes taken by Guanding of lectures given by Zhiyi (on specific dates, at specific places); or a record of Zhiyi's lectures to which Guanding added his own views. However, Hirai strongly suspects that the entire work was composed by Guanding himself, and Zhiyi played no part whatsoever in its composition. [Hirai’s views on T1716 are not adequately proven, and remain no more than suspicions --- KHR]

Ng summarises views of ascription in the Zhiyi corpus, as propounded/summarised in turn by

Satō Tetsuei 佐藤哲英. Tendai daishi no kenkyū 天台大師の研究. Hyakkaen 百華苑, 1961.

According to this summary, the following works represent notes taken of Zhiyi's lectures by his followers, especially Guanding, but only circulated after his death, and therefore not reviewed by Zhiyi himself; these works do not bear Zhiyi's stamp of approval. These works can nonetheless be regarded as authentic representations of Zhiyi's thought.
