Extant manuscripts 筆寫本 of the Yusim allak do 遊心安樂道 T1965 are the Raigōin version 来迎院本 and a version from Meireki 4 (1658) 明暦四年本, both held in Japan. The Raigōin version does not record the author 撰者, but the Meireki 4 version records the author as Wonhyo 釋元曉撰, and the Taishō Tripiṭaka directly copies this attribution. However, after Mochizuki Shinkō 望月信亨 (1869–1948) showed that T1965 quotes from the Adhyāśaya-saṁcodana 發勝志樂會 of the Mahāratnakūṭa T310, as well as from the Amoghapāśakalparāja 不空羂索神變真言經 T1092, both attributed to Bodhiruci in the early 8th century, there arose a controversy over its authorship. In 1959, Murachi Tetsumyō 村地哲明 raised the theory that T1965 was falsely attributed. However, Ahn Gye-hyeon (1961) and others argued that T1965 was indeed by Wonhyo and that the problematic parts were later additions: that Wonhyo originally cited 發覺淨心經 T327 and 不空羂索咒經 T1093, both translated by Jñānagupta 闍那崛多, and that when T1965 was transmitted in Japan, the citations were changed to Bodhiruci’s trnaslations by the Japanese monk Kōben 高辨 (Myōei 明恵, 1173–1232) of Kōzan-ji 高山寺, who wrote a commentary on T1965 entitled 光明真言土沙勧進記. Various views have been presented on the author of T1965, arguing that Wonhyo did not write it. There are various opinions, including: the theory that a Silla monk supplemented and revised 無量壽經宗要 T1747 by Wonhyo (Go Ik-jin 高翊晋, 1976); the theory that a Japanese monk from Eizan (叡山) compiled it in the mid-10th century (Ochiai Toshinori 落合俊典, 1980) ; the theory that a Silla monk from the lineage of the Hongfa-si temple 弘法寺 compiled it in the mid-8th century (Jang Hwi-ok 章輝玉, 1985) ; the theory that the author is Kim Dae-seong 金大城 (700–744), the founder of Bulguksa Temple 佛國寺 (Shin Hyeon-suk 申賢淑, 1992); the theory that a Silla monk wrote it in the mid-8th century (Han Tae-sik 韓泰植, Dharma name Bogwang 普光, 1991); and the theory that the author was Chikei 智憬 (d.u.), a monk of the Kegon sect at Tōdai-ji (東大寺) in 8th century Japan (Atago Kuniyasu 愛宕邦康, 2006). |
Tsujimoto surveys theories about the ascription of T1965, as follows: Murachi Tetsumyō 村地哲明: false attribution to Wonhyo Among these, Atago Kuniyasu is notable as the only scholar who has made a concrete suggestion about an alternate attribution. For this reason, Tsujimoto himself agrees with the theory of Japanese authorship, and accordingly, follows the Japanese rather than the Korean pronunciation (and Romanisation) of the title: Yūshin Anraku dō instead of Yusim allak do.
