McRae briefly notes that already in 1905, Nukariya Kaiten had "argue[d] from quite a number of perspectives that [X26, X27] is apocryphal." This text is significant because it is the basis for the story that the Buddha transmitted the Dharma to Mahākāśyapa by holding up a flower, at which Mahākāśyapa signalled his understanding by smiling, 拈花微笑.
