Tokyo: Iwanami shoten, 1941. — 532-533

The Mile danglai sheng jing 彌勒當來生經 is listed as an unseen text in Dao'an's list of anonymous scriptures, and hence already at the time of Sengyou, it should no longer have been extant. However, this text is in fact extant, since it should be considered as the same as the Mile lai shi jing 彌勒來時經 T457, listed in KYL 開元錄 as an anonymous scripture in the E. Jin 東晋 period. This being the case, either the title Mile danglai sheng jing or Mile laishi jing should suffice. However, LDSBJ and the Neilu 内錄 of DTNDL do not include either, while KYL includes both. Thus, those catalogues are mistaken in this regard. Also, since it has been found that the extant Mile lai shi jing T457 is the same as the Mile danglai sheng jing, it is incorrect to describe the latter as being lost. Moreover, given that the Mile lai shi jing T457 is the same as the Mile danglai sheng jing, it should have been produced in the W. Jin 西晋 period, not the E. Jin 東晋 period as KYL says, because the Mile danglai sheng jing was already on Dao'an's list. (For detailed support for his arguments, Hayashiya refers to his own Hayashiya 1945, Chapter 5.)

Tokyo: Tōyō bunko, 1945. — 141-215

Hayashiya argues that, of 6 texts in a group of Maitreya scriptures included in the Taisho, the Mile lai shi jing T457, an anonymous scripture recorded in the Eastern Jin catalogue 東晋錄, should be regarded as translated in the W. Jin period. (The “group of Maitreya scriptures” refers to the texts that describe Maitreya as a future Buddha and the heaven Maitreya resides in, and also other titles related to them.)

Hayashiya argues that T457 is an anonymous scripture of the Western Jin period, not of the Eastern Jin. This is because the text is listed in Dao’an’s catalogue, and the vocabulary is likely to be of that period, since it is older than that used by Kumārajīva. The older terms Hayashiya mentions include 我曹, 比丘僧, 佛圖, and 佛説如是 (146, 209-210).

(In support of his claims, Hayashiya lists detailed differences between T453, T454, T456, and T457 in length at 149-171.)

Tokyo: Sakaino Kōyō Hakushi Ikō Kankōkai, 1935. — 425-427

According to Sakaino, the traditional view about the alternate translations of the Mile xiasheng jing 彌勒下生經 is that three of the six translations are extant 六譯三存 viz., the Mile lai shi jing 彌勒來時經 T457, the Mile xiansheng jing 彌勒下生經 (彌勒下生成佛經 T454) ascribed to Kumārajīva, and the Mile xiansheng cheng Fo jing 彌勒下生成佛經 T455 ascribed to Yijing 義浄 were considered extant, while the Mile danglai sheng jing 彌勒當來生經, the Mile zuo Fo shi jing 彌勒作佛時經, and the Mile xiasheng
jing 彌勒下生經 ascribed to Paramārtha 眞諦 were regarded as lost.

In addition, according to Sakaino, the Mile cheng Fo jing 彌勒成佛經 ascribed to Dharmarakṣa and the Mile da cheng Fo jing 彌勒大成佛經 T456 ascribed to Kumārajīva are considered to be the same text 同本, and different from the so-called Xiasheng jing下生經. However, Sakaino points out that the Mile da cheng Fo jing 彌勒大成佛經 should be regarded as just an alternate version 異本 of the Xiasheng jing 下生經, being not much different from it.

[Dao'an catalogue]  Dao'an 道安.
Tokyo: Tōyō bunko, 1945. — 466

Hayashiya examines Dao’an’s list of anonymous scriptures, as “recompiled” by Sengyou under the title 新集安公失譯經錄 at CSZJJ T2145 (LV) 16c7-18c2. The Mile danglai sheng jing 彌勒當來生經 is included in the section of the Dao'an/CSZJJ list for texts listed as “missing” 闕; 18b9. Hayashiya gives, in tabulated form, information about the treatment of the same texts in Fajing T2146, LDSBJ T2034, the KYL T2154, and his own opinion about whether or not the text is extant in T, and if so, where (by vol. and page no.). The above text is identified by Hayashiya with the Mile lai shi jing T457, listed in the present canon (T) as anonymous 失譯.
