De Jong follows GSZ in identifying Zhisheng as the actual translator of the text, and the four-member team that was responsible for the full process of translation. He notes that "Buddhajīva undertook this translation four months after having arrived at [Yangzhou]. His knowledge of Chinese must have been practically nil. His task must have been to read aloud the text in its original wording. [Zhisheng] then translated the text orally..."

Buddhajīva arrived in Yangzhou 揚州 in the seventh month of Jingping 1 宋景平元年七月 (423). The manuscript had been obtained in Sri Lanka 師子國 by Faxian 法顯. Faxian had died leaving it untranslated. In the eleventh month 十一月 of the same year the text was translated at Longguang-xi 龍光寺. Buddhajīva held the Indic text 什執梵文; the Khotanese monk Zhisheng interpreted 于闐沙門智勝為譯; and the text was taken down 執筆 and polished 參正 by Daosheng 道生 and Huiyan 慧嚴.

Matsuda points out that T1421 contains a reference by title to T185: 如瑞應本起中說, T1421 (XXII) 102c20. Given that T185 itself is regarded as probably only coming to its present form in China, this raises questions about when and where this passage entered the text.

It is not exactly correct to say that *Buddhajīva 佛陀什 and Zhu Daosheng 竺道生 were the translators of the Mahīśāsaka Vinaya 彌沙塞部和醯五分律 T1421, since Daosheng served only was the amanuensis 筆受 in the translation process, together with Huiyan 惠嚴. Sakaino claims that if one more name other than 佛陀什 to be added to the ascription, it should be Zhisheng 智勝, who was the oral translator/interpreter 傳語.
