Hayashiya disputes the received ascription of the Wugou xiannü jing 無垢賢女經 T562 to Dharmarakṣa, on stylistic grounds. He compares T562 to several texts which he regards as established Dharmarakṣa translations (the Xianjie jing 賢劫經 T425, Wenshushili xianfa zang jing 文殊師利現寶藏經 T461, and the Wenshushili jinglü jing 文殊師利淨律經 T460). Hayashiya argues that T562 is likely to be a work of the W. Jin, but that differences in phraseology with T425, T461 and T460 show that it is not by Dharmarakṣa. He regards 淸信士, 淸信女 and 莫不歡喜 as characteristic Dharmarakṣa markers, instead of which T562 uses 學士, 學女 and 大歡喜 respectively. Hayashiya also points out that the tone of T562 lacks Dharmarakṣa’s lively touch (480-481). Hayashiya also mentions that the title Wugou xiannü jing 無垢賢女經 appears in Dao’an’s catalogue as an anonymous scripture (484-485), and that T562 contains a phrase that could be the source of the title Wugou xiannü jing 無垢賢女經, viz., 佛告女菩薩無垢賢女…. Hayashiya’s full argument also depends in part upon comparison of T562 with other extant parallel translations (Fu zhong nü ting jing 腹中女聽經 T563, ascribed to *Dharmakṣema, and Zhuan nü shen jing 轉女身經 T564, ascribed to Dharmamitra), and full discussion of the treatment of various related titles in catalogues from CSZJJ to KYL.

The eighteen texts listed in this entry, Mei observes, are ascribed to Dharmarakṣa in the present Taishō, but not by CSZJJ. The majority of these texts, Mei suggests, did already exist at Sengyou's time, but Sengyou listed them as anonymous. Thus, Mei argues that further research is required to determine whether or not these texts really are by Dharmarakṣa.

Hayashiya's summary of the content of the catalogues on this and related titles is as follows:

A Wugou xian jing 無垢賢經 is listed in Sengyou's recompilation of Dao'an's catalogue of anonymous scriptures 新集安公失譯經録 with the alternate title Wugou xiannü jing 無垢賢女經. The text was extant at the time of Sengyou.

Fajing’s Zhongjing mulu included in its " Mahāyāna sūtrapiṭaka catalogue" 大乗修多羅藏錄 the following five titles as alternate translations of the same text:

Zhuan nü shen jing 轉女身經
Wugou xiannü jing 無垢賢女經
Fu zhong nü ting jing 腹中女聽經
Taizang jing 胎藏經
Bu zhuang jiao nü jing 不莊校女經

Among these titles, Taizang jing 胎藏經 is already listed in the group of texts ascribed to Dharmarakṣa 竺法護 in CSZJJ; Tai zhong nü jing 胎中女經 (Fu zhong nü ting jing) is in Sengyou's recompilation of Dao'an's catalogue of anonymous scriptures, which is also a part of CSZJJ; and Bu zhuang jiao nü jing 不莊校女經 is in the catalogue of assorted anonymous scriptures 失譯雜經錄, another part of CSZJJ. Except for the Zhuan nü shen jing 轉女身經 the Fu zhong nü ting jing and 腹中女聽經, the above listed titles in Fajing came from CSZJJ.

However, Hayashiya points out that there are considerable discrepancies between later catalogues concerning records of those titles, and that the relations between those records are also complicated. For example, LDSBJ does not include the Wugou xiannü jing; ascribes the Zhuan nu shen jing to Dharmamitra 曇摩蜜多; ascribes the Fu zhong nü ting jing (with the alternate title Bu zhuang jiao nü jing) to *Dharmakṣema 曇無讖; ascribes the Taizang jing to Dharmarakṣa; and ascribes the Bu zhuang jiao nü jing to Zhi Qian 支謙. Hayashiya maintains that, in such a situation, it is not possible to examine the ascription of the Wugou xian jing 無垢賢經 only, without discussing the other titles in the same group as well. Thus, he refers to his own Muku kennyo kyō iyaku kyōrui no kenkyū 無垢賢女經異譯經類の研究 for further details about the ascriptions of the Wugou xuan jing and related titles.

Balkwill notes that in the Hôbôgirin Répértoire, the same Sanskrit title is given for T562, T563, T564, T565 and T566. She notes, however, that all five cannot possibly be a translation from the same source work, since they vary greatly in length. She suggests, rather, that they fall into three groups: T562 and T563 are variant versions of the same basic text; T565 and T566 are variant versions of the same text; and T564 is unique. [Balkwill herself goes on to show that the texts were not treated as five variant translations or versions of the same basic text in Fajing, nor in the "Buddha Names Sutra" T441, nor in the modern Taisho. Thus, it seems that for the case of T565 and T566, at least, her argument is only against HBGR, and only against what she feels is an identity between the texts implied by the application of the same reconstructed Sanskrit title to all five. However, she does note that Fajing, T441 and the Taisho all group T564 together with T562 and T563, which she shows clearly to be in error. See also separate note on T564. --- MR]

Hayashiya examines Dao’an’s list of anonymous scriptures, as “recompiled” by Sengyou under the title 新集安公失譯經錄 at CSZJJ T2145 (LV) 16c7-18c2. The Wugou xian jing 無垢賢經 is included in the section of the Dao'an/CSZJJ list for texts listed as extant 有; Sengyou adds an interlinear note: 或云無垢賢女經; 17a13. Hayashiya gives, in tabulated form, information about the treatment of the same texts in Fajing T2146, LDSBJ T2034, the KYL T2154, and his own opinion about whether or not the text is extant in T, and if so, where (by vol. and page no.). The above text is identified by Hayashiya with the Wugou xiannü jing 無垢賢女經 T562, attributed in the present canon (T) to Zhu Fahu 竺法護.
