In the course of examining other texts ascribed to Faju 法炬 by various catalogues, Hayashiya makes reference to these two texts as a benchmark. In so doing, he states that he regards the style of these two texts as consistent with one another [MR: though it is not clear that this is sufficient for us to take the next step and state that this means that they are indeed by Faju, and should not be taken as implying that it is Hayashiya's view that the ascription of the two texts to Faju is correct].

Funayama summarises prior scholarship which argues that the 法句譬喻經 T211 is not a full and direct translation of a single source. Sources have been identified in earlier Chinese works such as the Zhong benqi jing 中本起經 T196, which has itself been shown in turn to have portions that possible date later than the original Han translation by Tanguo 曇果 and Kang Mengxiang 康孟詳, perhaps dating as late as the Jin 晉. T211 has also been shown to have relations to the Zi'ai jing 自愛經 T742, the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra 佛般泥洹經 T5, and the *Udānavarga 出曜經 T212. Funayama refers to Enomoto (1994), Tanabe (2000), and Kamitsuka (2001).

The ascription of T211 to Faju and Fali found in the present canon (the Taishō) probably dates back to LDSBJ, where the title of the present T211 is given as an alternate title for the 法句本末經五卷, with a note stating that this is the second translation: 第二出。亦云法句譬喻。亦云法喻法或四或六[ +卷 YM]. However, the same title is also listed among anonymous E. Han texts.

In Sengyou's Chu sanzang ji ji, T211 is regarded as an anonymous translation, that is to say, it is listed in the "Newly Compiled Continuation of the Assorted List of Anonymous Translations" 新集續撰失譯雜經錄 (juan 4):

法句譬喻經一卷(凡十七事或云法句譬經).

According to Saitō, the rhymed verses in the Dharmapada 法句譬喩経 T211 ascribed to Faju and Fali are identical with those in the Dharmapada 法句経 T210, the Zhong benqi jing 中本起経 T196 (152c), and the Weicengyou yinyuan jing 未曾有因縁経 T754 ascribed to Tanjing 曇景 (587a). Saitō maintains that the translators of T211 must have taken the verses from one of those earlier works.

Moretti shows in a table that a chunk of a verse and a half (six four-syllable feet) is rather closely paralleled (with slight variations in wording) between the Jing du sanmei jing 淨度三昧經 (cf. X15), the Dhammapada T210 ascribed to Weiqinan 維祇難 but probably by Zhi Qian (see Nattier 2008), the Dhammapada T211 ascribed to Faju 法炬 and Fali 法立, and the Si zi qin jing 四自侵經 T736 ascribed to Dharmarakṣa,
