Fei Changfang 費長房. Lidai sanbao ji (LDSBJ) 歷代三寶紀 T2034.

A considerable portion of the overall aim of Storch (2014, passim) is to rehabilitate Fei Changfang, to some degree, from the bad reputation he has among modern scholars. See separate assertion record on T2034 for details. See also Tokiwa (1938): 41-73. Tokiwa basically argues that Fei is not as unreliable as many modern scholars think, and preserves valuable information from lost catalogues; and that many of the errors Fei has transmitted to us were inherited from his predecessors, rather than his own fault. See separate assertion record on T2034 for details. ToC in Storch (2016): 120.

Fei Changfang's LDSBJ is the primary source for the account of the origins of the Zhancha jing 占察經 T839. Allegedly, there was a monk in the Guangzhou region who engaged in a practice called “stūpa contrition” 塔懺法, which entailed divination for the prognosis of karma, and expurgation of bad karma by self-flagellation. The activities of his group were reported to the Guangzhou officials under the charge of 妖 [pernicious magical practices? witchcraft? spirit possession?]. An investigation was conducted, and the group claimed in their own defense that their practice was based upon the Zhancha jing. Saṃgha authorities found that the catalogues contained record of the translator or place of translation, and declared that the practice was in violation of scriptural authority.

In LDSBJ, Fei frequently claims to based his ascriptions upon a so-called Bielu 別錄, for which he states that the author was unknown, but which appeared to date to the [Liu] Song 眾經別錄二卷(未詳作者似宋時述);

The ascription of T214 to Zhi Qian found in the present canon (the Taishō) probably dates back to LDSBJ, which cites no particular source.

At 55a19, following CSZJJ 27c1, Fei gives another note, 𤢴狗齧王經一卷(舊錄云𤢴狗經), which may referring to the same text by two alternate titles, but which could also be evidence of a variant text telling the same story (the narrative element of a dog biting its master matches T214 in content).

A similar title, 沙門頭陀經, identified with an alternate title 十二頭陀經, is treated as anonymous in Fascicle 14, 117b15. An apparent hybrid of these two titles, 沙門為十二頭陀經, is also listed among anonymous E. Han texts, 55b15. Note that CSZJJ lists two related titles in immediately succession in Fascicle four (where all texts are treated as anonymous): 十二頭陀經一卷, 沙門為十二頭陀經一卷, T2145 (LV) 30b12-13. It seems, then, that LDSBJ, rightly or wrongly, treats the two titles in CSZJJ as separate items, and regards them as having had different fates.

Abstract:

"This study examines the biography of the monk Baoyun 寶雲 (376?-449) and lists all the titles of the translation projects in which Baoyun was involved. By comparing the information provided by different Buddhist catalogues, several discrepancies between the information on Baoyun provided by Buddhist bibliographer Sengyou 僧祐 (445-518) and by later accounts became evident. This study contextualizes the life of Baoyun in a broader historical perspective and presents the life of a monk who was a companion of Faxian 法顯 (336?-422) in his famous journey to the west, fluent in Indic languages, and a proficient translator."

Lettere argues that we can see a gradual process by which the true scope of Baoyun's activities as a translator, originally represented rather clearly by Sengyou and the sources he collects (CSZJJ), was already diminished or undermined by Huijiao (GSZ), Fei Zhangfang (LCSBJ), and Fajing; and also seems to have suffered from being overshadowed by the reputation and legends that accrued to the personality of Faxian. In the course of her treatment of biographical and other external sources on Baoyun (CSZJJ, GSZ, and documents like prefaces), Lettere notes evidence that Baoyun might have been the principal translator for the following works:

T192 (Lettere holds unequivocally that this work is "erroneously attributed to Dharmakṣema/Tan Wuchen 曇無讖", following Willemen 2009 [in error this reference is given as Chen Jinhua]: xiv-xvi);

a "new Sukhāvatī" 新無量壽 [sic, for *Amitāyus] [Lettere's citation of studies by Nogami 1950, Gotō 2006, 2007, and Nattier 2003 implies that she identifies this title with T360 -- MR];

with Zhiyan, according to Sengyou's CSZJJ, three titles: the Puyao jing 普耀經, the Guangbo yanjing jing 廣博嚴淨經, and the Si tianwang jing 四天王經 [cf. for the last two titles respectively Avaivartikacakra 廣博嚴淨經 T268, and Si tianwang jing 四天王經 T590 -- MR];

the Śrīmālādevīsiṃhanāda 勝鬘經 [T353];

the Za’ahan jing 雜阿含經 (*Saṃyuktāgama) and the Fagu jing 法鼓經 [Lettere again does not go into the problem of identification with extant texts, but cf. Saṃyuktāgama T99 and the *Mahābherīhāraka-sūtra T270 -- MR];

a Mahāparinirvāṇa in six fascicles 六卷泥洹 [cf. T7 -- MR].

[To this list we should add the Laṅkāvatāra T670; Lettere omits to list it, but cf. 後於丹陽郡譯出勝鬘楞伽經, GSZ T2059 (L) 344b3, which in fact comprises two titles, the Śrīmālādevī and the Laṅkāvatāra; cf. Lettere 265 n. 9 -- MR.]

Lettere also notes evidence that Baoyun may have composed a lost travelogue of his journeys, entitled Youlü waiguo 遊履外國.

In LDSBJ, two titles are added to Baoyun's credit; Fufa zang jing 付法藏經 [cf. T2058] and Jingdu sanwei jing 淨度三昧經 [cf. X15]; and an *Akṣayamatinirdeśa 無盡意菩薩 to the joint translatorship of Baoyun and Zhiyan [cf. T397(12)]. Lettere notes that the poor reputation of Fei as a cataloguer makes these ascriptions less plausible.

In the fifth fascicle, in the section on translators from the Wei and Wu regimes, Fei Changfang lists a Cha xulai jing 叉須賴經 in one juan among six translation texts attributed to Bai Yan 白延, which he is supposed to have produced during the reign of Gaogui Xianggong 高貴鄉公 [i.e. Cao Mao 曹髦, 241-260 CE, the grandson of Cao Pei]. The title listed includes the character 叉, but Fei adds that ‘one version/some versions? do not have the cha character,’ and here he invokes the authority of ‘Zhu Daozu, Sengyou, etc.’ According to the brief narrative appended to the list, at that time ‘The śramaṇa Bai Yan 白延 from the Western Regions, traveling and teaching, in the Ganlu 甘露 reign era (256-260), established residence at Baima Temple, where the saṃgha requested him to take up translation work” (T2034, 56c8-18).

Further in the fifth fascicle, still in the section on translators from the Wei and Wu regimes, but this time in the catalog of Zhi Qian’s works, Fei lists a Xulai jing 須賴經 in one fascicle. Fei adds that it is the second translation, after Bo/Bai Yan’s above, that its alternative title is 須賴菩薩經, and that he relies here on the authority of Zhu Daozu’s catalog and of the CSZJJ (T2034, 57b13).

In the tenth fascicle, in the catalog of translations he attributes to Guṇabhadra 求那跋陀羅, Fei places a 貧子須賴經 in one fascicle, invoking the Li Kuo catalog as his source (T2034, 92a2).

In the fourteenth fascicle, in the list of ‘Mahāyāna’ texts to be entered into the canon 大乘錄入藏目, in the subsection of texts with a known translator 有譯, Fei lists the 須賴菩薩經 in one fascicle. He says this text is the one also known as 須賴經, and that it is a retranslation 再譯. This description matches what Fei had to say about a Zhi Qian translation by the same two titles: clearly this is the text he recommends for inclusion in the zang—no mention of the alleged Guṇabhadra translation (T2034, 111b12).

In the fourteenth fascicle, in the list of ‘Mahāyāna’ sūtras to be entered into the canon 大乘錄入藏目, in the subsection of texts without a known translator 失譯, Fei lists a ‘minor’ Xulai jing小須賴經 in one fascicle (T2034, 113a8).

The title listed includes the character 叉, but Fei adds that ‘one version/some versions? do not have the cha character,’ and here he invokes the authority of ‘Zhu Daozu, Sengyou, etc.’ According to the brief narrative appended to the list, at that time ‘The sramana Bai Yan 白延 from the Western Regions, traveling and teaching, in the Ganlu 甘露 reign era (256-260), established residence at Baima Temple, where the samgha requested him to take up translation work” (T2034, 56c8-18). In the tenth fascicle, in the catalog of translations he attributes to Gunabhadra 求那跋陀羅, Fei places a 貧子須賴經 in one fascicle, invoking the Li Kuo catalog as his source (T2034, 92a2). In the fourteenth fascicle, in the list of ‘Mahayana’ texts to be entered into the canon 大乘錄入藏目, in the subsection of texts with a known translator 有譯, Fei lists the 須賴菩薩經 in one fascicle. He says this text is the one also known as 須賴經, and that it is a retranslation 再譯. This description matches what Fei had to say about a Zhi Qian translation by the same two titles: clearly this is the text he recommends for inclusion in the zang—no mention of the alleged Gunabhadra translation (T2034, 111b12). In the fourteenth fascicle, in the list of ‘Mahayana’ sutras to be entered into the canon 大乘錄入藏目, in the subsection of texts without a known translator 失譯, Fei lists a ‘minor’ Xulai jing小須賴經 in one fascicle (T2034, 113a8).
