“Hoke kyō ni okeru Hōgo to Rajū no yakugo 法華経における法護と羅什の訳語.” In Hoke kyō no Chūgokuteki tenkai 法華経の中国的展開, edited by Sakamoto Yukio 坂本幸男, 445-470. Kyoto: Heirakuji shoten, 1972. — 454-457

Kanakura discusses again (cf. Kanakura 1971) the (well-known) problem of T335 not fitting Kumārajīva’s style, and points out that it starts, atypically for Kumārajīva, with 聞如是. He cites Eda Toshio 江田俊雄 writing in the Bussho kaisetsu daijiten (Ono and Maruyama 1933-1936) for the observation of an exception to the overall close overlap between T334 and T335: a passage of approximately 800 characters in length apparently interpolated into T335 [T335 (XII) 80c15-81b7]. Kanakura also notes that there are differences in a few terms between T334 and T335, but these terms are also atypical of Kumārajīva. He therefore proposes that the text was composed by someone other than Kumārajīva, lightly revising Dharmarakṣa's text.

[Buswell 2004]  Buswell, Robert E., Jr. "Sugi's Collation Notes to the Koryŏ Buddhist Canon and Their Significance for Buddhist Textual Criticism." The Journal of Korean Studies 9, no. 1 (2004): 129-184. — 144-145, 153

Buswell reports that Sugi disputed the ascription of this text to Kumārajīva. KYL recorded four versions of the text, three extant (a Bodhiruci translation was already lost). Two translations were ascribed to Dharmarakṣa(!). Sugi found the supposed Kumārajīva version (=T335) in the Khitan canon was virtually identical to the Dharmarakṣa translation (T334) of the Koryŏ and Kaibao canons, concluded that the so-called Kumārajīva version was redundant and excised it from the canon accordingly. The present Taishō text is taken from the Chongning (Song) edition. Buswell confirms that T334 and T335 are "indistinguishable".

Mei reports that the canon contains two supposed versions of the 須摩提菩薩經 (T334, T335), one ascribed to Dharmarakṣa, and one to Kumārajīva. However, the two resemble one another too closely to be the work of separate translators, and are separated only by variants introduced in scribal transmission. Mei prefers the ascription to Dharmarakṣa for both.

[Demiéville 1953]  Demiéville, Paul. “Les sources chinoises.” In L’Inde classique: Manuel des études indiennes, Tome II, by Louis Renou and Jean Filliozat, 398-463. Paris: Imprimerie Nationale/Hanoi: École Française d’Extrême-Orient, 1953. — 415-416

Demiéville lists and discusses texts ascribed to Kumārajīva by Sengyou, namely T201 T223 T227 T235 T245(!) T262 T366 T456 T475 T613 T614 T616 T617 T1435 T1509 T1564 T1568 T1569 T1646. This implies that the ascription of all other texts ascribed to Kumārajīva in the Taishō is less secure than those ascriptions, on at least this count. This entry lists all such texts (all "Kumārajīva" texts EXCEPT those listed by Demiéville/Sengyou).

[NOTE: Demiéville's list is to be used with caution. For example, as Lin Xueni points out (personal communication), he omits the Kuśalamūlasaṃparigraha 華首經 T657, even though it is in fact listed by Sengyou, CSZJJ T2145 (LV) 10c21. I have therefore corrected, and do NOT include T657 in this list of possibly dubious ascriptions.]

Kanakura argues that 須摩提菩薩經 T334 and 須摩提菩薩經 T335 are virtually identical, and demonstrates this close relationship by giving a parallel table of both texts in full, highlighting the few differences (236-248). Kanakura further asserts (without giving details) that terminology and phraseology leave no room for doubt about the ascription to Dharmarakṣa (for T334), but render the ascription of T335 to Kumārajīva highly suspicious.

However, Kanakura also shows that there is an exception to the above relationship of virtual identity between the two texts. A portion of T335, approximately 800 characters in length, is not found in T334 [T335 (XII) 80c15-81b7]. Kanakura argues that this portion appears to be an interpolation into T335, as it does not fit naturally into its context. A new interlocutor appears partway through this passage, a Brahmin girl named 首意, and at the same time the topic shifts from illusion to turning the wheel of the Dharma (234-235); other content in this passage, which appears extraneous to the remainder of T335, is the appearance of Ānanda and the declaration that he has been awakened with respect to seven subtle dharmas 七秒法.

[Boucher 1996]  Boucher, Daniel. "Buddhist Translation Procedures in Third-Century China: A Study of Dharmarakṣa and his Translation Idiom." PhD dissertation, University of Pennsylvania, 1996. — 277

T335 to be a “mere reworking” of Dharmarakṣa’s Xumo[ti pusa] jing Sumatidārikāparipṛcchā-sūtra T334, and therefore “almost certainly” not the work of Kumārajīva.

Tokyo: Sakaino Kōyō Hakushi Ikō Kankōkai, 1935. — 350-358

In his discussion on Kumārajīva, Sakaino presents a list of titles newly ascribed to Kumārajīva in LDSBJ, and lists of titles that Fei took in groups for this purpose from the newly compiled catalogue of anonymous scriptures in CSZJJ These new ascriptions are thus part of a very broad pattern that Sakaino traces in LDSBJ, whereby Fei gives random and baseless new ascriptions for titles treated as anonymous by Sengyou. Sakaino marks extant titles. This entry is associated with titles Sakaino marks as extant; we list all such texts in T still ascribed to Kumārajīva, the ascriptions for which thus probably derive from LDSBJ.
