One text bearing the same title as T269 is the only text ascribed in LDSBJ to *Kalyāṇa?? 支疆梁接魏言正無畏, with an interlinear note saying that Sengyou regarded the same text as anonymous (note missing in P). The general note on this translator claims that Fei supplied the ascription on the basis of the Zhu Daozu catalogue 竺道祖魏世錄, the Shixing lu, and the Jiaozhou (catalogue?) 交州 (this appears to be the only time Fei mentions such a catalogue). However, a second entry in LDSBJ ascribes a text of the same title to Zhiyan and Baoyun, and this would appear to be the ultimate source of the attribution of T269 to Zhiyan in the Taishō. Sakaino presents a list of works ascribed to Zhiyan 智嚴 in LDSBJ (14 titles), and makes the following general claims: Four should be excised, as KYL points out (three are considered byproduct/offshoot excerpts 別抄, and one apocryphal 疑); Three more were already listed in CSZJJ, among which the Guangbo yanjing jing 廣博嚴淨經 [廣博嚴淨不退轉輪經 T268] is the text that can be regarded most safely as Zhiyan’s work; Five more titles are apparently taken from Sengyou’s “newly compiled catalogue of anonymous scriptures” 新集失譯錄. Among them, three (菩薩瓔珞本業經, 阿那含經, and 淨度三昧經) are clustered as the beginning of Sengyou’s catalogue, hence Sakaino suspects that Fei just took those titles and arbitrarily re-ascribed them to Zhiyan; Four overlap with works ascribed to Dharmarakṣa (including 2 titles, the Lalitavistara 普曜經 T186 and the Guangbo yanjing jing, for which cf. T318, already listed in CSZJJ for both Zhiyan and Dharmarakṣa). Sakaino states that, in this case, Fei might have simply been confused, partly influenced by the fact that CSZJJ did ascribe the Lalitavistara and the Guangbo zanjing jing to both Zhiyan and Dharmarakṣa. Nothing is known about the 善德優婆塞經. Although Sakaino does not explicitly say which texts other than T268 can be safely regarded as Zhiyan’s work, he implies that there are none, as the Lalitavistara ascribed to Zhiyan has been lost, and while the Si tianwang jing 四天王經 ascribed to him was listed in CSZJJ, the extant text of that title,T590, is probably apocryphal. According to Sakaino, some catalogues state that Zhi Jiangliangjie 支彊梁接 translated the Fahua sanmei jing 法華三昧經 (cf. T269), but this ascription is groundless, as it was initially made by Fei Changfang in LDSBJ, and probably he took the title 正法華三昧經 (6 juan) in from the “catalogue of missing scriptures not yet seen” 闕經未見目錄 in CSZJJ. Sakaino claims that Sengyou may be right in stating that Zheng fahua sanmei jing 正法華三昧經 may actually be just an alternate title of the Zheng fahua jing (Saddharmapuṇḍarīka) 正法華經: 疑卽是正法華經之別名 (32a11). Kamata remarks that Zhi Jiangliangjie 支彊梁接 and An Faxian 安法賢, to whom LDSBJ ascribes several texts, citing the Wei catalogue 魏世錄 and the Shixing catalogue 始興錄, may be fictitious persons. Translator-monks with such names might have existed, but ascriptions to them are groundless, e.g. that of the Fa hua sanmei jing 法華三昧經 (cf. T269) in six juan to Zhi Jiangliangjie and that of the Luomoqie jing 羅摩伽經 (cf. T294) and a Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra 大涅槃經 to An Faxian. Entry author: Atsushi Iseki |

According to the abstract, Radich argues: "Fei Changfang/Zhangfang’s 費長房 Lidai sanbao ji 歷代三寶紀 T2034 (completed in 598) is a source of numerous problematic ascriptions and dates for texts in the received Chinese Buddhist canon. This paper presents new evidence of troubling patterns in the assignment of new ascriptions in Lidai sanbao ji, and aims thereby to shed new light on Fei’s working method. I show that Lidai sanbao ji consistently gives new attributions to the same translators for whole groups of texts clustering closely together in a long list of texts treated as anonymous in the earlier Chu sanzang ji ji 出三藏記集 T2145 of Sengyou 僧祐 (completed ca. 515). It is impossible that Sengyou grouped these texts together on the basis of attribution, since he did not know them. The most economical explanation for the assignment of each individual group to the same translator in Lidai sanbao ji, therefore, is that someone added the same attributions in batches to restricted chunks of Sengyou’s list. This and other evidence shows that Lidai sanbao ji is even more unreliable than previously thought, and urges even greater critical awareness in the use of received ascriptions for many of our texts." Radich argues that the patterns of unreliable information he has here uncovered cast doubt upon the ascriptions of all the texts affected.
