[Ono and Maruyama 1933-1936]  Ono Genmyō 小野玄妙, Maruyama Takao 丸山孝雄, eds. Tokyo: Daitō shuppan, 1933-1936 [縮刷版 1999]. — Vol.7, 68-69

According to Mino Kōjun 美濃晃順, there are considerable differences between this text in the Korean version, titled 雜譬喻經 (cf. T204), and the Song 宋, Yuan 元, and Ming 明 versions (entitled 衆經撰雜譬喩), and hence they should be regarded as different texts.

T208 consists of thirty nine fables and legends, quite a few of which are closely paralleled in Kumārajīva’s works. Mino maintains that, although the Taishō records that T208 was composed by Kumārajīva and compiled by Daolüe 道略, it is in fact more likely that it was simply compliled by Daolüe, taking only the stories from Kumārajīva’s works.

[Demiéville 1953]  Demiéville, Paul. “Les sources chinoises.” In L’Inde classique: Manuel des études indiennes, Tome II, by Louis Renou and Jean Filliozat, 398-463. Paris: Imprimerie Nationale/Hanoi: École Française d’Extrême-Orient, 1953. — 415-416

Demiéville lists all the texts ascribed to Kumārajīva by Sengyou, namely T201 T223 T227 T235 T245(!) T262 T366 T456 T475 T613 T614 T616 T617 T1435 T1509 T1564 T1568 T1569 T1646. This implies that the ascription of all other texts ascribed to Kumārajīva in the Taishō is less secure than those ascriptions, on at least this count. This entry lists all such texts (all "Kumārajīva" texts EXCEPT those listed by Demiéville/Sengyou).

According to Sakaino, CSZJJ ascribes 31 texts still extant today to Kumārajīva. Sakaino maintains that three of them should not be regarded as Kumārajīva’s independent works. This entry is associated with the remaining 28 titles.

Tokyo: Sakaino Kōyō Hakushi Ikō Kankōkai, 1935. — 347-349

Sakaino states that Za piyu jing (1 juan) is listed in CSZJJ as one of Kumārajīva’s works (cf. T208). There also exist two other Za piyu jing 雜譬喩經 in Sengyou's newly compiled catalogue of anonymous works 新集失譯錄, in 2 juan and 1 juan respectively. LDSBJ lists a Za piyu sanbai shou 譬喩三百首 in 25 juan, which it ascribes to Dharmarakṣa. Sakaino quotes Sengyou’s note on the anonymous Za piyu jing in 1 juan, and explains that Sengyou suspected that these various Za piyu jing might be offshoots 分支 of the same ~ sanbai shou 三百首 ascribed to Dharmarakṣa. However, Sakaino points out that there might be some confusion in the record of these various Za piyu jing. The note on the one ascribed to Kumārajīva states that it was compiled by the Bhikṣu Daolüe 比丘道略所集 (cf. T207), but nothing much can be inferred further than that (349).

"Shukyō senzatsu hiyu to Dai chido ron to no kankei ni tsuite" 『衆経撰雑譬喩』と『大智度論』との関係について.

Sugiyama argues that the Zhongjing zhuan za piyu T208 ascribed to Kumārajīva (two fascicles) is different from the Za piyu jing in one fascicle 雜譬喻經一卷 比丘道略所集 recorded in the Chu sanzhang ji ji 出三藏記集 T2145. Both texts belong to the genre of 雜譬喻經, categorised among scriptures authored by saints from the western countries (西方諸聖賢所撰) in Jingtai's 靜泰 Zhongjing mulu 眾經目錄 T2148, and must to certain degree share similarities.

The Za piyu jing in one fascicle, which is now lost, is among eight Za piyu jing reported in T2145. These eight versions should also have been known to the author of the Jinglü yixiang T2121, composed in the same period. According to Jingtai, there was a Za piyu jing in one fascicle and ten sheets, which he ascribed to Kumārajīva, and held to have been compiled by Daolüe "雜譬喻經一卷十紙 後秦世羅什出道略集". Ten sheets is much shorter than the extant T208. There is no clear evidence whether Daolüe 道略, if it is a proper name, was foreign or Chinese.

Regarding internal evidence, there is one story from the *Mahāprajñāpāramitā-upadeśa T1509 present in both T208 and T2121, but T2121 names only T1509 as the source. According to Sugiyama, this shows that during the Liang 梁 period, this story existed only in T1509 [implying that T208 had not yet been composed --- LCW].

Kimura takes as his baseline for his examination of the Kumārajīva corpus the 24 texts that Fei Zhangfang, in LDSBJ, reports were ascribed to Kumārajīva in the Er Qin lu, supposedly by Sengrui. On this basis, Kimura argues that nine texts that were added to Sengrui’s list by Sengyou 僧祐 in CSZJJ: the Śūraṅgamasamādhi 首楞嚴經二卷 T642, a Pusa jing 菩提經一卷 (cf. Gayāśīrṣa T464), the Yi jiao jing 遺教經一卷 (??), the Shi’er yinyuan jing 十二因緣觀經一卷 (??), the Pusa he seyu 菩薩呵色欲一卷 T615, the Chan fa yao jie 禪法要解二卷 T616, the Za piyu jing 雜譬喻經一卷 T208, the Shi’er men lun T1568, and the Chan fa yao 禪法要三卷 (cf. T616 again?). Kimura concludes that these nine texts must have been entries in error, or duplicate entries

S.2872, P.3747. Dating complex and unclear.

In the "Liu Song" Zhongjing bie lu 劉宋眾經別錄, as represented by a Dunhuang manuscript fragment, P.3747, the following titles are listed, which may correspond to extant texts (in some cases, identification is rather tentative). In contrast to some other titles, which are treated in separate CBC@ entries, these titles are listed in the Bie lu without any further accompanying information (e.g. about ascription or date). Note that the Bie lu includes interlinear notes giving such information, and the scope of application of those interlinear notes is sometimes uncertain: it can be hard to tell whether they apply only to the single title preceding the note, or to a group of titles leading up to the note; and if they apply to a group of titles, how many. Titles in the DH ms. Bie lu are identified by the numbering in Tan (1991), given at the beginning of each line.

Many of these same titles are treated as anonymous and extant in CSZJJ fascicle 4. The same is also true of a number of titles not listed here, because the texts in question appear not to be extant.

Texts presently ascribed to Dharmarakṣa and to Zhi Qian (excepting T361) are excluded from this entry, because they are treated in other CBC@ entries.
